Security Breaches in Small Companies More Rampant and Less Reported
Ponemon recently surveyed 1200 businesses with $10 million revenue or less and found that a whopping 55% reported at least one data breach.. Here’s the kicker – 67% of the compromised businesses did not inform their customers of the breach which is against the law. “We’re too small to matter...” is the rationalization. But as these data breaches get more frequent, law enforcement is cracking down on these lacks of disclosure. Not to mention the businesses risk losing customers once they are informed, especially since network security has been more affordable than ever and easy with all-in-one UTM devices.
Malware and distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are common network threats from which businesses need protection. Deep Packet Inspection firewalls, Intrusion Detection and Prevention services and Anti-Virus services are an extremely effective deterrent against these threats. Channel partners can use free service trials (like one offered to purchasers of ZyXEL UTMs) and reporting features to demonstrate the usefulness of these services to their customers. Once convinced of its benefits, partners will not only help clients enjoy far better security, but enjoy recurring revenue from annual renewal of these services.

5 Top VLAN Applications
Megan Santosus recently wrote an excellent article on applications of Virtual LANs (VLANs) for ChannelPro magazine. Here are the 5 main applications for your business customers:
- VLANs are useful in separating networks based on a business’ different operational departments and also for granting access to IT resources to selective groups.
- BYOD is here to stay; helping your business customers to securely manage this phenomenon can be a lucrative service. VLANs can help you control both the traffic as well as the devices accessing IT resources. VLANs can be set-up to identify traffic originating from different types of devices like smart phones or tablets, and selectively grant them access or completely deny it.
- VLANs can also aid in improving performance of real-time applications like VoIP and video chatting, increasingly critical business applications, by segregating them from other data traffic, and then prioritizing them using QoS features built into Ethernet switches (like the ZyXEL GS2000 and GS3000 series)
- Security can be further enhanced with VLAN by separating databases to the application servers that access them. That way, forcing database access through app servers and limiting direct access to databases substantially improves data security.
- VLANs can be used as a quick and easy way to offer guests Internet access securely while isolating them the data maintained on the corporate network.
